BPCF is sad to announce that Gallery by the Gulf is closing.  Hurricane Harvey damaged the entire area surrounding Bolivar and took away our Labor Day.  As a result, visitors to the Gallery are less and sales have been slow.

We have had two great years and thank the community for their support. We would not have been successful without the wonderfully talented artist who were a part of the Gallery.  We would like to thank the permanent artists that worked and supported the Gallery.  Thank you also to the many consignment and Featured Artists who came through the Gallery.

Madonna Powers

I have always loved to paint, and I have had many different instructors. The instruction I loved and learned the most from was with the famed Houston oil artist Dick Turner (deceased). I started out with oils, a wonderful forgiving medium. Around 1980 we had an art business (instruction and sales) in League City, named “ARTIQUE”. We had oil and watercolor instructors. One of the watercolor instructors, “Karen” introduced me to watercolors, not a forgiving medium. So until we sold Artique, I painted in both mediums, entered a few shows, including the Galveston Art League Juried show, and won a few awards. After selling the business, we moved to Crystal Beach, which might be the best place in Texas. I took my art instruction with me to our home in Copacabana. I had some awesome students. We lost our home to IKE, so I discontinued my instruction business. Now I paint in watercolor for pleasure and hopefully a few sales.

MARCH, 2016

Cissy Boyd worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor for 33 years before retiring last year. While she has always loved pottery she did not pursue the art of making pottery until about 15 years ago. Realizing that she would have an empty nest soon, she decided to fill her time by taking a succession of pottery classes at her local junior college. Since that time she has developed an organic and imperfect style that often includes natural materials as decorations for her pieces. Cissy has a deep love for the ocean and sees it as a remarkable example of God’s power and beauty, and as a result has developed a series of pieces that incorporate ocean colors and objects found on the beach. Cissy lives full time in Bullard, TX with her husband Terry, but they will be dividing time at their new beach house in Crystal Beach. She and Terry have 2 sons, ages 27 and 24.

catherineleePlease welcome Catherine Lee, painter, from Galveston, Texas who will be the Artist of the Month for February at Gallery by the Gulf, 1980 Hwy 87, Crystal Beach, TX. An artist reception will be held Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 10 am until 4 pm. Refreshments will be served. Stop by for a visit during our Mardi Gras parade that day. Catherine describes her love of art. “I started painting as a child with the watercolor trays we all used to get for Christmas. As a young mother I stopped to raise my children and picked it up again about 18 years ago.

I didn’t start to paint professionally until a series of life changing events led me to the beach and back to the paints. I use a bright happy palette and love to paint what I see at the beach.

Often I pick up items off the beach and collage them into my paintings to make others aware that we need to stop trashing our beaches. I am grateful to all the wonderful people who buy my art! ”

The artist of the month is Sheryl Lambert. Come see her works of fused glass called Quotentials.  Bowls, jewelry, plates, etc.
